The federal government governs air traffic control of aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) operates the control tower at FXE. The responsibility of controllers is to provide a safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of traffic.  

Executive Airport’s first tower cab was constructed on top of the Yankee Baseball Stadium on the northwest corner in 1966.  By 1973, the FAA completed construction of a control tower, 37 feet tall to the floor of the cab.  Starting in 1989, the tower was operated 24-hours a day, which supported the Noise Compatibility Program.

The FAA constructed a 98-foot tall control tower to the top of the cab, which was commissioned on November 4, 2014.  The tower design meets new FAA requirements for access and security and was constructed with hurricane resistant materials. The taller height of the tower provides controllers improved views of the airfield, which will further enhance operations.

The CBP facility at FXE is located on the east side of the Airport property for international arrivals.

The new $5.7M complex, which was primarily funded through grant from the Florida Department of Transportation, significantly enhances airport operations, optimizes speed and efficiency, and dramatically improves service delivery; all of which will greatly benefit the corporate and recreational travelers who arrive at FXE from around the globe.

Automated Passport Control Kiosks

U.S. citizens and Canadians, as well as travelers that reside in one of the Visa Waiver Program countries, are eligible to use the APC kiosks. To use the kiosks, travelers input the same information they would enter on a Customs Declaration form into a kiosk, scan their passport and fingerprints, confirm their flight number, and take a photo. The kiosk will provide a receipt that travelers then present to a CBP officer at the check-out point. The APC kiosks will process travelers who reside at the same address together.

There is no charge to use the new kiosks and pre-registration or membership is not required; however, Visa Waiver Program travelers must have Electronic System for Travel Authorizations (ESTA) approval and have visited the U.S. after 2008.

Global Entry Kiosks

Executive Airport is the first General Aviation airport in the country selected by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) to receive a Global Entry kiosk, which is a CBP program that allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to expedite entrance into the United States upon arrival.

With the kiosk, pre-approved travelers no longer need to complete a customs declaration before landing and may skip process lines at checkpoints. Instead, they can simply check-in at the kiosk by scanning their passport or resident card and their fingertips for verification and completing the Customs declaration online. The kiosk will issue the traveler a transaction receipt and, if cleared, he or she can simply exit the facility, saving valuable time.

Local Boater Option (LBO) Program

Unless directed by a CBP officer, a participant in this program does not have to report for an in-person inspection.

Visit Small Vessel Reporting System to apply online for LBO participation and schedule an appointment for an interview at one of the authorized enrollment centers. The CBP facility at Executive Airport is part of the LBO Program.

The John Fuhrer Fort Lauderdale Downtown Helistop is situated above the Central Park Mall Parking Garage in the heart of Fort Lauderdale’s dynamic downtown. The helistop offers convenient access to the City’s Central Business District and many of Broward County’s government, financial, educational and cultural attractions located in Fort Lauderdale.

The Downtown Helistop is conveniently located just three miles north of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and six miles south of Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. Miami International Airport is 25 miles to the south and easily accessible by air.

The helistop operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no fees to users. The lobby is available with advance reservations.

• Use of helicopter parking space is limited to four hours and reservations are required.
• Overnight helicopter parking is not permitted.
• Student pilots on solo flights are prohibited from utilizing the facility.

In 1972, after recognizing the potential aviation hazard, the Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Department along with the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, established the first special operations team, “The Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting” (ARFF) team. The ARFF team is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

All ARFF members are trained in the operation of the department’s specialized ARFF apparatus. The ARFF truck carries 1500 gallons of water, foam and Haltron (eco-friendly clean agent), and thermal imaging equipment. These vehicles have pump and roll capabilities that help our team members get close to the crash in a safe manner.

The Observation Area has become a favorite lunchtime and early evening spot for people both on and off the Airport to observe the vast variety of interesting aircraft that use Executive Airport. The facility totals approximately 24,000 square feet and includes a lushly landscaped and sodded perimeter and a 3,700 square foot concrete raised viewing area. Three 10-foot wide steps with four 10-foot by 10-foot planters lead up to the viewing platform where the public can get a close-up view of Airport activity. There is an ADA compliant ramp for access to the observation deck. The viewing area offers three picnic tables and two benches constructed out of recycled plastics.

The Observation Area is located on Perimeter Road along the approach end of Runway 09 in the southwest corner of the Airport. It can be accessed from Prospect Road just east of NW 31st Avenue. There are five parking positions and one handicapped parking space available.
